Prompt 1, write about your character going to a very formal occasion.
There was a certain feeling of uneasiness as Hitomi stood there without his mask. Though the outfits some of these people around him were wearing were quite ridiculous, his mask did not fit the theme of this gala at all. A theme of Fairy Tales and Royalty, of Princes and Princesses, of hope. What this gala was for was both a mystery and a bore to the young man. By now he was used to it after all, a gala here, a fancy dinner there, all of it was the same. Of course he went after all, it was his duty. Yet as the Exterminator leaned against the buffet table, carefully scouting out who to talk to next, he longed for something to take him out of this moment. By all means, he wasn’t obligated to be here, not even socially. But this was an obligation nonetheless, one that was slowly growing on his nerve with each passing moment. If only he could simply head home and- “Suprised to see you again so soon. Though, I would have recognized you earlier if you had worn your mask.” With one sentence, a young mint haired woman was able to drain Hitomi of the worry and sadness flooding his mind. She was good at this after all, far far too good. The way she knew so much about him even when he had told her so little was both inspiring as it was deeply concerning. Yet for now, he wouldn’t think about that. Talking to her was far more enjoyable than staring at the ballroom or speaking to another CEO. “Sadly, a skull doesn’t work as well with a fairy tale theme as a butterfly does.” Hitomi replied with a weak smile as he looked over at the woman who had joined by his side. “Oh? You were able to realise that? How much you’ve grown Tsuchida. You’re almost like a butterfly yourself~” Yumi softly laughed into her hand as her one visible eye locked with Hitomi’s. It was quite strange that both of them would meet again so soon, yet neither was complaining. Though they would never be able to enjoy this night as a sappy couple like many around them, they could still enjoy it was the masked strangers they were, though… Well, it was single masked stranger this time around. “You still haven’t explained what you mean with that.” The young man snapped back as his gaze once again locked on the ballroom floor, his arms crossed behind his back.
“If I did, it would ruin it and you’d be stuck like this forever. Speaking of which, are you planning to spend another whole night waiting in one spot? Or do you wish to dance again?” The Plastic Surgeon took two steps forward and with a twist held her hand out to Hitomi. Though her teasing was meant jokingly, the way Hitomi’s frown faded had her quite worried. “It’s alright if you don’t want to. The last time ma-” “We may as well. Though it won’t be as nice as the last time, it beats standing here. You are right. I could hardly spend another night just standing still, waiting for time to pass me by. Thank you Yumi.” Hitomi, with a little bit of hesitation, eventually took the young woman’s hand and stepped towards the dance floor with her. In this moment, they were dancing for no one in particular, for no emotion whatsoever. It was simply for the motions they could enjoy with the other, even if they both wished it could be with someone else, someone more special. Another step forward and he closed his eyes. If he thought about it hard enough, he could feel like he was in the scene he always imagined. Though Yumi was nothing like her, she was still the closest person to her he had found. However, it didn’t work. So instead of imagining, he kept his eyes shut and simply thought about nothing. He had practiced this dance enough to know the steps by memory anyway. He also knew that Yumi likely wouldn’t mind. What others thought wasn’t important in that moment, the world wasn’t watching. For just a moment, he could have peace and quiet, even among the large crowd. Sadly however, this couldn’t last. After just another bit of hesitation, Hitomi opened his eyes. In the corner of his eye, as the two swirled around the dancefloor and the individual lamps and candles turned into a sea of light, he saw her there. Had he seen her first? Or was it the feeling of a particular presence among the crowd? Was this even important? Another step taken, like each before in execution, but lacking something. While this dance was far from the dance he sought, there was still something Hitomi could enjoy about it. But in this moment, with that one feeling of being watched, he remembered his duties. He was a Midoshita Representative after all. Dance, because the world is watching. Hold your head high, because the world is watching. With every step you take, remember, that the world is watching.
